I was first hit by a wall of humidity. Rhia had portalled us to Vietnam, behind what appeared to be a tiny gas station. The building was half concrete, half wood, with a red, corrugated metal roof. We leaned against its back wall as the portal snapped shut. I tried to take a deep breath and almost choked. The air was thick, and sweat was already beading behind my ears.

Pulling my hair into a ponytail, I glanced over at Hunter, whose neck was growing red, and he quickly ripped off his leather jacket. Handing the outerwear to Rhia, he asked if she could take it back to Europe. She nodded and looked over at me.

I waved her away. My long-sleeve, cotton shirt was thin enough that if I needed to, I could rip off the arms and fashion myself a tank top.

“Suit yourself,” Rhia said with a shake of her head.

She turned and nodded toward the hill behind the gas station. “You’ll find Henri’s old house up there. Take the road to your right and keep walking until you hit the fork. Then follow the right side path.”

I nodded, absorbing her directions like my life depended on it.

“It’ll flatten out after a few minutes, and you’ll see a small house between the trees. That’s the place.”

“And you’re sure no one will be there?” Hunter asked, adjusting the gun at his hip and covering it with his black T-shirt, which didn’t really help but at least was a little less obvious that he was carrying a firearm.

Rhia shrugged, her lips quirking up at the corner. “Can’t make any guarantees, but there shouldn’t be.” She wrapped Hunter’s jacket into a ball and added, “I brought you here so you wouldn’t ambush anyone, on the off chance that someone else is living there now.”

I raised my hands in a surrendering motion before wiping them across my jeans. It was a fair decision. We couldn’t be sure that someone hadn’t commandeered the residence for themselves, and with my current track record of public appearances, the slow approach was wiser.

“Thank you,” I said with a nod.

She returned the gesture before briefly closing her eyes. A moment later, a portal grew behind her—a dark, navy center ebbing outward into jagged rings of white and electric-blue light. Even after all these months, I was still in awe of the magical entity. My chest sparked in its presence, and the stone in my pocket hummed lightly too.

“I’ll be doing research with the lads. Text me if you run into any issues,” Rhia said and walked through the portal.
